Having Fun At Work, But With Serious Intent
Work doesn't have to be tedious ...
As a business owner, I am of the opinion that if you can make things fun at work, everything will be nicer. Nicer for me, nicer for my employees, but, especially, nicer for my customers ...
Having fun at work can be as simple as remembering to celebrate every employee's birthday!

However, 'making things fun' is more complicated than you would initially think. Research has shown that making things fun is actually serious stuff! Which is precisely why every business owner with a team should not only know about it, but also consider how it can be used in their business.
Increased productivity - 96% of executives say that having fun improves productivity
Improved creativity - Cornell University found that making things fun increases creativity
Better sales - People like and trust you more if you smile and one company even increased its sales by 15% after hiring a theatre director to teach them to smile
Reduced stress and tension
Improved team spirit and teamwork
Improved employee retention, because they liked their workplace and colleagues
As a result, this will help make:
I want my workplace to be fun, but my intent behind this is deadly serious because it will mean my company performs better. But don't take my word for it, look at some very recent 'fun' research, like that carried out by VW and the Fun Theory project.
The Fun Theory
VW have some great video clips of making things fun, so check out www.thefuntheory.com to see if these video clips not only make you smile, but also get you to think about what they achieve by making things fun!
The Levity Effect
It's a book! And the research behind it is that the promises of fun will encourage much higher productivity.
The Path to 'Great'ness
It all starts not by being great, but by having the right conditions to be great ... and research by the Great Place to Work Institute shows that 'great' businesses consistently earn higher marks for fun!
So, how do you start having fun in the workplace? Well, it all starts with a change in perception: that work can be fun, not tedious! Then you have to find ways to develop the fun and build positive energy. But be careful, fun has to be inclusive! You need to encourage and enable everyone to join in, not force fun upon them.
This isn't about being a prankster or making fun of people. Sometimes you need a sense of purpose. Set a goal such as "we can have fun after we have achieved X". At other times, you can relieve a stressful situation by introducing an element of fun immediately.
"Would you like to put the words 'fun' and 'work' together?"
